The NBA is currently experiencing it's highest level of parity ever thanks to new CBA rule changes and a shift away from the superteam-style teams we saw dominate the 2000s & 2010s. In the last 7 years, the NBA has had 7 different champions; Raptors, Lakers, Bucks, Warriors, Nuggets, Celtics, Thunder - something that has never happened in league history.
However, we think there a few teams poised to become repeat-champions in the next five years, with 3 organizations standing out. Now, pre
2025-26
Oklahoma City Thunder defeat Boston Celtics (4-1)

Fresh off a championship last year, the Thunder have dealt with significant injuries to almost every player on their roster, with the 2nd most games missed to injury league-wide behind only the Indiana Pacers (Currently 15-54, worst record in the league). Even though they've been injured, the Thunder have managed to maintain the best record in the NBA, currently sitting at 54-15. This is a testament to OKC's depth and winning nature, which is why we predict they will come out of the Western conference this year, beating out either the Spurs or Lakers in the conference finals.
On the other side of the country, Eastern conference teams are racing for seeding, with only one-and-a-half games separating 5th and 9th on the table. The top 4 in the East could all make the conference finals, but we're giving the edge to Boston and Detroit, who we think will play a seven-game-series. The Pistons have looked amazing this year, with Cade Cunningham emerging as a Top-5 MVP candidate, and Jalen Duren breaking out as an All-NBA level talent. The Celtics on the other hand have proven resilient, currently holding a record of 45-23 without having their franchise cornerstone on the court for the majority of the season. We predict Boston to make the Finals on the back of their proven play-off experience, but don't worry Pistons fans, there's always next year.
For this year's NBA finals, whichever team wins the Western Conference, will more than likely cakewalk the team representing the East. The Thunder are miles ahead of the Celtics, and the series won't be close, however, the Celtics still have another 5+ years in contention with this current core.
2025-26 Dark Horse Pick: Denver Nuggets - The Nuggets have the best player in the world on their team, and if Aaron Gordon, Jamal Murray and Christian Braun step up, they could reign terror on lesser-experienced teams like OKC and San Antonio.
2026-27
San Antonio Spurs defeat Detroit Pistons (4-2)

Victor Wembanyama is not from the planet Earth, and the Spurs have done an excellent job building around him. The success that San Antonio has seen in the regular season already, is a direct indicator that they mean business, and will be battling the Thunder in the Western Conference Finals for years to come For 2026-27, it isn't out of the realm of possibilities for the Thunder to have take a step back, as they're expected to lose key players Lu Dort and Isaiah Hartenstein.
Out East, the Pistons will have another year of player progression, and valuable playoff experience under their belt, finally making it to the Finals, where Wemby ultimately proves unstoppable, winning the MVP and Finals MVP.
2026-27 Dark Horse: LA Lakers - With LeBron James nearing retirement, the Lakers may have an additional $40+million in usable cap space in a stacked free agency class. Even if they add role players around the $15million mark, a core pairing of Reaves and Doncic could surprise the league come postseason.
2027-28
Oklahoma City Thunder defeat Charlotte Hornets (4-0)

This Thunder team is ridiculously stacked with both proven and young talent, and OKC also control 10 first-round picks in the next 5 years. If any superstar player requests a trade, OKC has the assets to get a deal done, so it is hard to see them not winning at least 3 rings with this team. Shai is and will be an MVP candidate for years to come, and progression will be what separates the Thunder from other teams. These predictions bank on the projected improvement of Ajay Mitchell, Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren, Jared McCain, and anyone they draft.
In the Eastern conference, the Charlotte Hornets have started to make some noise, with this year's roster being easily the most enjoyable, competitive and respectable team Charlotte has had in a long time. Their core of LaMelo Ball, Kon Knuepple, Miles Bridges and Brandon Miller makes for one of the best on-court +/- combinations in the entire league. The only problem they face is health, so we predict they will have at least one Finals run as other Eastern Conference giants Boston and NY fade away.
2027-28 Dark Horse: Indiana Pacers - The Pacers made the Finals in 2025, but to say their run was anything short of a miracle would be lying, so we don't expect them to make it back there... unless their projected first overall pick Darryn Peterson lives up to the hype and the Pacers become a powerhouse in the East.
2028-29
San Antonio Spurs defeat Atlanta Hawks (4-1)

I know a pattern is starting to form, but genuinely, how could anyone ignore the looming domination of the league by two powerhouse franchises built to last around generational talents? You can't.
Atlanta has a nice young core of 2-way players, and Anthony Edwards has previously hinted at playing for his hometown Hawks, so this prediction relies on that happening. Jalen Johnson, Dyson Daniels, Kuminga, Okongwu, Kispert, Nickiel Alexander-Walker and Zacc Rissacher are all the type of players a championship team requires, so if they can land an MVP-level guy, they become a championship level team.
2028-29 Dark Horse Pick: Washington Wizards - Depending on how players progress, namely Tre Johnson, Alex Sarr, Kyshawn George and Bilal Coulibaly, the Wizards could pose a threat in the Eastern conference. After acquiring Anthony Davis and Trae Young, Washington seems to want to compete sooner rather than later, and the team is good on paper, but there is too much uncertainty, so they remain a dark horse pick.
2029-2030
Detroit Pistons defeat LA Lakers (4-3)

After 5 years of West champions, we predict the Detroit Pistons will win a championship led by Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren. The Pistons have quickly gone from being historically bad, to being a true contender, and with a bit of postseason injury luck, they could steal a ring in 2030.
If the Lakers don't make the finals once with Luka in the next 5 seasons they will be considered a failure. Rob Pelinka needs to build a contender around Doncic and that may take some time. However, the Lakers know how to get things done, eventually, so a trip to the finals by 2030 is what we're predicting, we just don't think Luka is good enough to lead a championship team.
2029-2030 Dark Horse: Dallas Mavericks - Cooper Flagg will be in his 5th year, and at his current trajectory he should be an MVP candidate by then. It's hard to imagine a league in which the Mavs aren't competing for championships by 2030.
